The Primary Child , much like all children in the first plane of development, possesses uniquely powerful tools for learning and growth. He has universal tendencies that propel him to ever increasing levels of maturity and adaptation. He has sensitive periods for the acquisition of particular knowledge and skills such as language enrichment, reading, writing, music, order, etc…. And he has the power of the absorbent mind. The absorbent mind refers to the young child’s ability to absorb information directly from his environment. Dr. Montessori recognized these innate characteristics of the child and developed both materials and method with these natural resources in mind.
